1 thought on “Bishops behaving badly–not Episcopalian, Roman Catholic

  1. Can’t say I’m really surprised–if you take all of his rhetoric over the past nine years to its logical conclusion, it’s almost more surprising that something like this didn’t happen sooner.

Despite the fact that I left the Catholic Church because I could no longer support bishops and priests like him in good conscience, I don’t believe that he’s being intentionally mean-spirited, and it would take a lot to change my opinion on that. I think he, and all the other bishops, and Pope Benedict, truly believe they’re doing the right thing.

It will be interesting to see how long this disconnect between the clergy and much of the laity will remain sustainable. I can’t help but think that as the 1920’s-1940’s generations pass away and are replaced by more and more people who have never known anything but a “post-Sexual Revolution” world, that things are going to come to a head eventually. Of course, people have probably been saying that since before I was born, but when you look at the support for things like same-sex marriage and the almost universal use of contraception among women of child-bearing age, it’s not hard to think that this time might truly be different. As a side note–it’s easy to forget that there probably are still a lot of men and women out there who DID follow the teachings against birth control when they were in their 20’s and 30’s. And right now, they are the source of a lot of the Catholic Church’s funding. But the thing is–they aren’t getting any younger, and the 2-10% of young Catholics who choose not to use birth control won’t be paying very many of the Church’s bills on their own.

The U.S. is really the last “Western” country to give even token support to the Vatican’s traditionalist agenda–if that changes, things could get really unpredictable.
